One day a young man named Monty Roberts, while in his senior year in high school, was asked to write a paper regarding his aspirations for adulthood.

“He put a great deal of his heart into the project and the next day he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back. On the front page was a large red F with a note that read, `See me after class.’

“The boy with the dream went to see the teacher after class and asked, `Why did I receive an F?’

“The teacher said, `This is an unrealistic dream for a young boy like you. You have no money. You come from an itinerant family. You have no resources. Owning a horse ranch requires a lot of money. You have to buy the land. You have to pay for the original breeding stock and later you’ll have to pay large stud fees. There’s no way you could ever do it.’ Then the teacher added, `if you will rewrite this paper with a more realistic goal, I will reconsider your grade.’

“The boy went home and thought about it long and hard. He asked his father what he should do. His father said, `Look, son, you have to make up your own mind on this. However, I think it is a very important decision for you.’ “Finally, after sitting with it for a week, the boy turned in the same paper, making no changes at all.

He stated, “You can keep the F and I’ll keep my DREAM.”

In order for us to appreciate the gravity of the macro picture from 30,000 feet in the air, we need to look at the micro picture from 1,000 feet. And In order to do that we need to take a closer look at and have a keen understanding of the definition of the word DREAM and its Biblical origin.

Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary – Dream – a series of thoughts, visions, or feelings that happen during sleep. A visionary creation of the imagination.

In the Bible God used dreams to reveal a number of things (i.e. prophecy, precautionary warnings and encouragement). Dreams also provided a means to impart supernatural wisdom and discernment.

Prophecy

In the story of Joseph (Genesis 37.1-35) – Joseph was a little shepherd boy who was the son of Jacob. Joseph was known for being not only a dreamer but also an interpreter of dreams. His brothers hated him because he was favored by their father. Jacob, being especially fond of this son in his old age, bestowed Joseph with a coat of many colors. This outward display of embellished affection enraged the brothers. One day Joseph decided to share his dreams with his family. Upon hearing the vivid details of Joseph’s imagery the brothers despised him all the more and plotted to kill him. Even his own father rebuked him. But Instead of killing him they threw Joseph into a well. Little did they know that the harm that they meant towards Joseph, God would eventually use for THEIR good. Even though the weapons were formed against Joseph they did not prosper. Realizing that Joseph’s death alone would not profit them, his brothers greedily sold him. Joseph’s supernatural gift would later be used to interpret King Pharaoh’s dreams. As a result, Joseph would be placed as the second in command over Egypt. God would have it that the same brothers, who despised, rebuked, threw him in the well and sold him would eventually see Joseph again. But this time they would see him in his glory. Joseph was now in charge and in a position of authority. Although he had been grossly betrayed, Joseph never hardened his heart or misused his position in spite of their wrong-doing towards him. He took the high road and spared them by giving them mercy. However, they would still have to bow down at Joseph’s feet. We know that God does not like ugly, mean spirited behavior. Vengeance is Mine says the Lord.

All of this transpired as a result of a dream that God gave Joseph thirteen years prior. Although, Joseph’s dream didn’t happen right away, God moved on his behalf. God can cause the power of a dream to be actualized in the blink of an eye when you least expect it. Joseph was in a better place, position and season in his life to handle the fullness of his dream. Just because your dream doesn’t happen immediately on the timeline you expect it doesn’t mean that your dream is not going to happen. Never lose sight of your dream(s) and don’t allow others to push you in a direction that isn’t God’s will and plan for your life. Focus your thoughts on the pleasantries of your dream and filter your actions and decisions through the vision of your dream.

Precautionary Warning

In Matthew 2:12 God warns the wise men through a dream not to go back to Herod. We see another warning in Matthew 2:13 where God speaks to Joseph in a dream warning him to get up, take his mother and child and go escape into Egypt. In the same dream God instructs Joseph to stay there until He tells him to leave.

Encouragement

Some of you may know the story of Gideon in the book of Judges 7. Gideon receives a dream from God and in that dream he is encouraged to pursue the fight; for the outcome will be in his favor.

Judges 7:7-8, 15-16 NIV

“The Lord said to Gideon, “With the three hundred men that lapped I will save you and give the Midianites into your hands. Let all the others go home.” So Gideon sent the rest of the Israelites home but kept the three hundred, who took over the provisions and trumpets of the others.”

“When Gideon heard the dream and its interpretation, he bowed down and worshiped. He returned to the camp of Israel and called out, “Get up! The Lord has given the Midianite camp into your hands.” Dividing the three hundred men into three companies, he placed trumpets and empty jars in the hands of all of them, with torches inside.”

Judges 7:17-18 NIV

“Watch me,” he told them. “Follow my lead. When I get to the edge of the camp, do exactly as I do. 18 When I and all who are with me blow our trumpets, then from all around the camp blow yours and shout, ‘For the Lord and for Gideon.”

Moral of the Story

You must be committed to your dreams and willing to fight regardless of the cost. If you don’t believe in your dreams, how do you expect for them to ever come true? The cost of not fighting for your dreams is greater than the risk of fighting for your dreams and rising above your fears. You cannot afford to let shattered people shatter your dreams.

Today Monty Roberts has successfully achieved his dream. Not only is he known as “The Man Who Listens to Horses”, he is an award winning trainer, best-selling author, a Hollywood stuntman and has fostered and cared for 47 children.

Remember, people with no vision will always try to block your vision. The enemy is very cunning and comes disguised in the people that are closest to you. “Be sober, be vigilant; becauseyour adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.” (1 Peter 5:8 NKJV). His sole purpose is to kill your hope, steal your dreams and sabotage your future. However, sometimes you have to tell them like Monty did, “you can keep your F and I’ll keep my DREAM.”

That’s right, stand firm, fixed and unmovable in your beliefs. Let them know that we can agree to disagree, however, this is where I am going. Then love on them with the love of God in spite of what they have to say or do. Next take comfort and rest, with full assurance, that God will make your enemies your foot stools. The welcome mat that they walked over you on will not look as good as the red carpet that God has already allowed and predestined you to walk on.

The same teacher that tried to shatter Monty’s dream would end up apologizing to him face-to-face many years later. “Look, Monty, I can tell you this now. When I was your teacher, I was something of a dream stealer. During those years I stole a lot of kids’ dreams. Fortunately you had enough gumption not to give up on yours.”

Don’t listen to your critics and don’t give up on your dreams. You are only what others say about you that you internalize and believe to be true. God created you in His image and holds you in high esteem. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11 NIV) There is too much at stake and too many people depending on you. For years prior to the launch of Apollo 11 astronauts and engineers at NASA had been preparing to launch a space craft carrying live personnel. Finally, on July 29, 1969 it happened – man successfully walked on the moon. What looks impossible to man is always possible to God. The things that are seen are temporary but that which is unseen is eternal. Just because it’s delayed, doesn’t mean it’s denied. Be patient and stay the course. Remember, when God gives you a vision He will see to it that He provides you with provision.

Points to remember:

  • Everyone you share your dream(s) with can’t always handle your news.
  • People are attracted to your anointing, but they won’t always celebrate your blessing.
  • Sometimes it’s the people that are the closest to you that will cause you the most harm.
  • Don’t put your trust in man, put it in God. He will always deliver.
  • What the enemy intends for your harm, God uses for your good.
  • Remember your dream may not be intended to happen right now, but may have lasting effects on generations to come. Stay the course.
  • Some dreams must be interpreted with the help of others.
  • Be in tune to the voice and the mannerisms of God. You can easily recognize the voices of those you spend the most time with. Who are you spending your time getting to know?
  • Just because it’s delayed, doesn’t mean that it’s denied.
  • Don’t let broken and jealous people distract you and shatter your dreams.
  • It’s not about your timeline or others – it’s about God’s timeline and Will.
  • Obedience is better than sacrifice. God is always speaking. The question is are you listening and taking obedient action?
