The Choice of Obedience vs The Demonstration of Obedience

It all began over a spilled cup of coffee. This morning was no different than any other, with one exception…

I typically stop at 7-Eleven to grab a cup of coffee to start my day. However, this morning something was different. I encountered a gentlemen that I assumed worked at the store. I say that not based on what he was wearing, but rather what he was doing. He was cleaning up a spilled cup of coffee.

It’s not unusual for me to speak to strangers, however, after I spoke to him I made the connection that he was a patron just like me. As we walked to the checkout counter, I heard a voice that urged me to buy his coffee. I pondered for a hot minute. During that time, of hesitation, the gentleman handed the clerk his rewards card. I spoke up and said, “sir, the coffee is on me.” He immediately replied, “Thank you. Have a nice day.“

I handed the clerk the money for what I thought was the cost of both cups of coffee. The clerk then responded to me, “Here’s your change. His was FREE.”

When you hear the Holy Spirit prompting you to take action can God TRUST you to demonstrate your obedience to Him? Granted that this was a small sacrifice to say the least. However, if you were required to stand trial, would the evidence reveal your choice overriding/delaying action or your demonstration of obedience?

The prosecution would like to call CHOICE to the stand. CHOICE do you solemnly swear/affirm that you will tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you God, under pains and penalties of perjury?

CHOICE. What is your definition?

CHOICE is the act of selecting or making a decision when faced with two or more possibilities.

The choice between Good and Evil

Prosecutor: This morning when you saw the man inside the 7-Eleven and the Holy Spirit spoke to you. You were given a choice, correct? So, would that also imply that there might have been other options?

Defendant: Yes.

Could that also mean that a person has FREE WILL when faced with making choices?

Defendant: Yes.

Prosecutor: No further questions Your Honor.

Defense Counsel: The defense would like to call DEMONSTRATION to the stand.

DEMONSTRATION do you solemnly swear/affirm that you will tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you God, under pains and penalties of perjury?

DEMONSTRATION what is your definition?

DEMONSTRATION is the action or process of showing the existence or truth of something by giving proof or evidence.

Defense Counsel: So demonstration can you tell us, in your closing comments, how someone can distinguish between you and Choice?

DEMONSTRATION: Sure. I’m not just a thought. I’m the result or proof of the thought. As described in my definition I’m the process of showing the existence or truth. Much like when God revealed himself by sending Isaac a ram in the bush.

“Now it came about after these things, that God tested Abraham, and said to him, “Abraham!” And he said, “Here I am.” He said, “Take now your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you.” (Gen. 22:1-2 NASB)

He said, “Do not stretch out your hand against the lad, and do nothing to him; for now I know that you fear God, since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from Me.” Then Abraham raised his eyes and looked, and behold, behind him a ram caught in the thicket by his horns; and Abraham went and took the ram and offered him up for a burnt offering in the place of his son.” (Gen. 22:12-13 NASB)

Conversely, God made the choice long before He sent His son Jesus to die on the cross. However, Jesus demonstrated the true act of obedience not just by His death, but by His resurrection from the grave.

Defense Counsel: No further questions, Your Honor.

Prosecutor: Your Honor, the prosecution would like to call its final witness to the stand. At this time, we would like to call ALL CHRISTIANS who profess to have made the choice to follow Jesus, but yet have not demonstrated it through the action of love towards others…

As Christians we profess to love Jesus, but the Bible says, “If you love me, obey my commandments.” John 14:15 NLT

Everyday is a trial. When your trial is held will the evidence point in your favor? As I mentioned earlier, I heard the Holy Spirit prompting me to buy the coffee for the gentleman. What would have happened if I had ignored it and not taken action? How many of us are IGNORING God? I didn’t realize that his coffee would be FREE but the test was not. God will sometimes give you the smallest test just to see where you stand.
